Import products

Set the specification table and the compared products of many products at once, from a single CSV file.

Prepare the file

In Products, click Import, then Download sample file. Fill in one row per product:

handletablecompare_with
oslo-chairchairsbergen-chair, malmo-chair, turku-chair
nordic-tablefjord-table
fjord-tabletables
  • handle — the handle of the product to update. You’ll find it in the URL handle field of the product in Shopify, or in the Handle column of a Shopify product export.
  • table — the handle of the specification table to assign to the product. To find it, open the table in Specification tables: its handle is shown in the Handle card, and clicking it copies it.
  • compare_with — the handles of the products to compare it with, separated by commas, in the order you want them in the table. Up to 20 products.

Fill in the table column, the compare_with column, or both. In the example above, nordic-table only gets compared products and fjord-table only gets a table. You can also leave out a column you don’t need: a file with only the handle and table columns is valid.

Import the file

  1. Check the preview

Select the file. The app checks every handle, then shows how many products will be updated and lists the rows that can’t be imported, with the reason (unknown product or table handle, more than 20 products, product compared with itself, product already in a previous row…). Fix them in the file and select it again, or import the valid rows only.

  2. Import

Click Import. The import runs in the background: a banner on the Products page shows its progress, then its result. You can leave the page while it runs.

Things to know

  • Only tables and compared products are imported. Comparable variants and attribute values aren’t changed.
  • Values of the file replace the saved ones. For each product in the file, the table and the compared products of the file replace the ones already saved. A manually assigned table always wins over assignment conditions. Products that aren’t in the file aren’t changed.
  • Empty cells are ignored. An empty table cell keeps the table of the product, and an empty compare_with cell keeps its compared products. To remove them, open the product in the app.
  • One import at a time. The Import button is disabled until the current import is finished.
  • Spreadsheet files are supported. Handles are case-insensitive, spaces around commas are ignored, and files saved by Excel with semicolons (as in some languages) can be imported as they are.
  • Products created a few seconds ago may be reported as unknown, as Shopify takes a moment to make them searchable. Wait a few seconds and select the file again.
